READ, WATCH, OR LISTEN!

Violence against women has been around as long as… well, women have been around. And the reasons behind it haven’t changed much over the millennia. But the technological advances of the past 30 years have brought a sea change in the tactics and tools used by batterers and stalkers to control, harass, and intimidate their victims. For the first time in history, they can do it from a distance.

Written for therapists, this course is personally narrated, with selected sections read aloud by Susan McMillan herself. It also offers useful information for women and people in same-sex relationships who may be dealing with an abusive partner—or ex.

You’ll explore the technologies available to batterers and stalkers, the tactics they use, and the impact these tools can have on victims in our increasingly connected world. The course also includes practical advice therapists can share with clients to help them recognize risks and protect themselves, along with a sample cyberstalking safety plan.

Course Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify the various technologies employed by batterers and stalkers as well as the various techniques to control, harass and intimidate their victims.
  • Participants will be able to understand and appreciate the prevalence of stalking behaviors using technology.
  • Participants will be able to appreciate the difference, in general, between male victims of stalking and female victims of stalking.
  • Participants will gain insight into the effects of technological stalking on victims.
  • Participants will learn some practical advice for victims and potential victims to avoid or minimize the ability of stalkers and batterers to use technology to control, harass, and intimidate their victims.
